Our Heritage

A vibrant campus history

1905
1905

Doors Open as Women’s Dorm

Carnall Hall opens as an all-girls' dormitory, the first in the state of Arkansas. It is named after Miss Ella Howison Carnall, a beloved English professor. 

1967
1967

Opens as a Fraternity House

Carnall Hall becomes the fraternity home of Phi Gamma Delta for ten years, from 1967 until 1977.

1982
1982

Joins the National Register

Carnall Hall is placed on the National Register for Historic Places, during which time it houses UofA offices and classrooms.

2001
2001

Is Saved From Demolition

Thanks to the passionate efforts of the community and dedicated preservationists, Carnall Hall is saved through public/private partnerships. 

2003
2003

Reopens as the Inn at Carnall Hall

A $6.3 million renovation is completed. Highlights include the restoration of the front porch and first-floor staircases. A year later, the  inn becomes a member of Historic Hotels of America.
